Compared to humans, dogs sleep a lot. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the average human adult does best with 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Dogs, on the other hand, sleep for an average of 12-14 hour in each 24-hour sleep cycle (source).

Do dogs spend most of their time sleeping?

Dogs tend to spend as much as half of their days asleep, 30 percent awake but relaxing, and just 20 percent being active. Older dogs require more sleep just because they tire out more easily and, as a general rule, bigger breeds also spend more time dozing.

How many hours a day does a mature dog sleep?

While puppies may be down for the count for up to 20 hours per day, fully grown dogs often get as many as 12 to 14 hours of Zzz’s in a 24-hour period — or about half the day.
